A multicultural and multiethnic society

Much has been discussed of the mixture of bloods and races that the Spaniards, unlike other colonizers of America, favored by three centuries of domination. It has been said that the mixture known as mestizaje was possible due to a certain tolerance of Iberian culture, the kind of tolerance that allowed coexistence and combinations of Arabs, Jews and Christians until the fifteenth century. But it must be considered that the Aborigines maintained an open attitude towards the human being, that perhaps conditioned the innocent welcome to the Spanish conquerors.

At first the children of a legal marriage between the triumphant Spaniards and the vanquished Indigenas were considered as Spaniards; Mestizos were only the children who had Spaniards and Indians in an out-of-wedlock situation. Over time, the terms "Mestizo and Mestizaje" was assigned to the product of the fusion between the indigenous race and Spanish. However, the merger did not have only these two elements.

Originally there were six ethnic variants in the new world: Indians, Spaniards, Europeans, American Spaniards (children of Spanish parents born in New Spain, later called criollos), blacks, mulattos (sons of Spaniards and Negroes) and zambos Indians and blacks). Then came the Chinese and Malays, and gradually the castes formed. With all these races, New Spain became the huge multiethnic and multicultural crucible from which emerged the current Mexican society. Some of the funny names with which this society was designated were:
